Advice for HCED students

BUIC members welcome students sponsered by the Higher Committee for Education Development as part of the Iraq Education Initiative to our website, and congratulate them on their success. We are proud to be working with and advising the HCED on this visionary scheme.

Our role is to help provide advice to candidates regarding placement at one of the 29 leading universities in the United Kingdom who are in the BUIC consortium.

Please note we are unable to give advice regarding institutions which are not part of BUIC. Any such queries would need to be directed to the institution concerned.

Below you will find guidance on how to apply if you have a scholarship. If you do not hold such a scholarship you cannot use this form, and instead should apply direct to the university of your choice.

Applying to BUIC Members

  1. If you hold a recognized Iraqi government scholarship you may use the BUIC application form, which allows you to apply to all relevant BUIC members without the need to contact each university separately. You need to supply the following supporting documents:
    1. An academic record in English.
    2. A research proposal (If you are seeking to undertake research)
    3. Results of formal English language qualifications
    4. Two letters of support by professors/Specialists
    5. Your CV
  2. When complete you should sign and e-mail a scanned copy of the form and copies of the supporting documents to the BUIC administrator who will acknowledge receipt by email, check to make sure the form is complete and contact you if there are any missing details.

Only complete applications will be accepted. It is up to applicants to answer all questions and provide the requested supporting documents. The BUIC administrator can be contacted to help clarify any questions you might have regarding the application form, but is not in a position to guide applicants through the admissions process or make academic decisions for them.
  3. Your application and any supporting documents are then passed on to the appropriate BUIC members based on the indication of preference you made, or if you haven't indicated a preference you are matched up with institutions based on the subject area of your proposed study.
  4. Students then follow the universities' admission process and hopefully receive a formal offer. Your sponsor may require copies of the formal offers before they can release the funds that are assigned to the scholarship holders.

What is the difference between a conditional and unconditional offer?

When you are offered a place to study at a UK university the University will send you an offer letter. There are two types of offer - unconditional and conditional.

An unconditional offer will be sent to you if you have met all the entry requirements for your chosen programme of study; this includes the academic entry requirements and the English language entry requirements.

A conditional offer will be sent to you if you have not yet met the academic and/or English language entry requirements for your chosen programme of study. The University will also tell you what conditions you must meet. Once you have met all the entry requirements, and have provided the required evidence to the University, the University will then issue you an unconditional offer which may be used for visa purposes.
