The University of Cambridge is one of the most ancient and distinguished universities in the world - currently rated second in the THE/QS and fourth in the Shanghai Jiao Tong rankings.
Cambridge's reputation for academic achievement is known globally and reflects both the abilities of its students and the quality of teaching and research carried out by its staff. The University is also closely linked with the high-tech business cluster in and around Cambridge known as Silicon Fen.
There are over 17,000 students at the University, including almost 3,000 international students from a wide range of countries.
The University is made up of 31 Colleges. Colleges are where students live, eat and socialise. They are also responsible for students' personal tuition and pastoral care.

The University offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses in arts, social science, medicine, science and engineering disciplines. Our courses are challenging but students with commitment, ability and motivation can expect intellectual satisfaction, and the knowledge and skills sought by employers at the highest levels.
At undergraduate level Cambridge is one of the most selective of all universities. Only about 25 per cent of all applicants are successful, and of these only about 10 per cent are from outside the UK. While academic strength is a pre-requisite, it does not guarantee acceptance; we are looking for well motivated students who Colleges feel are well matched for the courses they have chosen.
Cambridge courses specialise in single subjects or subject areas, for which A level examinations, covering 3 or 4 subjects in depth, are the usual preparation. We ask for the highest grades in these subjects, and assess students not only on their achievements in these exams, but also on their ability and readiness to join in discussion of their subject. Students need to be in the top 1-2 per cent of their year group, and doing very well in the subject area they would like to study.
For Graduate students at Masters and PhD levels the proportion of international students is much higher, in excess of 50% (including EU students). Students are normally expected to hold or to be about to achieve at least a 2i Honours degree from a UK university or an equivalent standard from an overseas university
