The University of Leicester, founded as a university college in 1921 and granted its Royal Charter in 1957, is a government-financed institution with a leading international reputation for teaching and research. We have over 20,000 students. Of the 11,000 full-time students, 17% come from outside the European Union, from over 80 countries.
The University has first-rate facilities for teaching, study, research, sports and leisure. The main campus occupies an attractive site close to the city centre and a short distance away there are excellent student residential facilities set in fine gardens.
Leicester offers degree courses in arts, science, medicine, law, education, biological sciences and social sciences. Many postgraduate courses are available by distance learning.
The University of Leicester is the Times Higher Education University of the Year 2008-9.
We are highly ranked, consistently in the top 20 of all national tables including 15th by the Guardian and 15th by The Times (2010). Leicester is also one of a handful of British universities to feature in the world's top 200 institutions (Times 2009).
Leicester, with a population of more than 300,000, is a commercial and cosmopolitan city with a wide variety of shops, restaurants, cultural and recreational amenities.
Surrounded by beautiful countryside, Leicester is situated almost exactly in the centre of England, 160km north of London (one hour by train) and within easy reach of many other major towns and places of interest - including Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, and both Oxford and Cambridge, the sites of the ancient universities.
Students make up over 12% of the population in term time, giving the city a vibrant and youthful feel. This is reflected in a wide choice of social and leisure facilities including many continental style café bars, lively clubs and pubs.
