University of Manchester

The University of Manchester has a long tradition of excellence in Higher Education. It was created by bringing together The Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST, two of Britain's most distinguished universities. After 100 years of working together, these two great institutions formally combined to form a single university in 2004, creating a powerful force in Higher Education. The University's roots go back to 1824 and the formation of the Manchester Mechanics' Institute, whilst The Victoria University of Manchester was founded in 1851.

No less than 23 Nobel Prize winners have either studied or conducted some of their work at Manchester: Rutherford began his work on splitting the atom here and the world's first modern computer also came into being at The Victoria University of Manchester. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), Manchester was rated third in the UK only to Oxford and Cambridge in terms of 'research power'.

Manchester is the most popular university in the UK, with the highest number of applications each year. The University enjoys an esteemed reputation for courses covering life sciences, engineering, humanities, economics, sociology and the social sciences. Manchester Business School is also respected world-wide and attracts many international students.

There are a number of notable Manchester alumni who hold positions of seniority in business, academia, politics, industry and the media, including the University's Chancellor Tom Bloxham, Chairman of Urban Splash. Other names include Sir Terry Leahy, Chief Executive of Tesco, writer / comedian Ben Elton and Anthony Burgess, author of A Clockwork Orange, a copy of which can be found in the John Rylands University Library.

Support is available for international students who may not have the appropriate subject background for direct entry to first year, in the form of a Foundation Year. This is a bridging course designed to provide such students with the necessary academic background for study at Bachelor degree level and includes additional English language teaching if needed.
