Oxford Brookes University

Oxford Brookes University is a premier learning and teaching institution that is widely acknowledged as the UK's leading modern university.

Oxford Brookes University began life as the Oxford School of Art in 1865, when it occupied one room on the ground floor of the Taylor Institution in the centre of the city. Its growth continued and under the leadership of John Henry Brookes, the School's main site was moved to Headington in 1949. Having become a polytechnic in 1970, Oxford Polytechnic became a university in 1992 under government legislation and decided to honour our founding Principal, John Henry Brookes, in the new title: Oxford Brookes University.

We offer foundation, undergraduate, pre-masters and postgraduate courses across a range of subject areas. All undergraduate (and some postgraduate) courses are modular, allowing students to sample a range of disciplines. Oxford Brookes has been rated excellent in more subjects than any other modern university by the UK government, and their strong reputation helps them to recruit high-quality staff and lecturers. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, more than three-quarters of our research activity was considered to be of international quality.

Nearly 19,000 students are enrolled on a wide range of disciplines across the three main campuses of Oxford Brookes (Headington, Wheatley and Harcourt Hilll). International students form nearly 20% of our student population and come from over 130 different countries worldwide.

Internationalisation forms a key part of Oxford Brookes' vision for 2020. Besides attracting international students, the University has partnerships with institutions from all around the world, including Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Poland and many other countries. We are international in our orientation: in our curriculum, our staff, our student body and our partnerships in an increasingly interdependent world. We are large enough to make a diverse range of opportunities available to our prospective students but small enough to offer a supportive and nurturing environment for both undergraduates and postgraduates.

Oxford Brookes is a member of the University Alliance, which is comprised of 22 major, dynamic universities with global reach that attract leading international students, academics and business partners. Alliance universities educate 26% of all UK students and achieve some of the highest graduate-level employment rates. These universities offer a research-informed, academic learning environment and a culture of entrepreneurialism, equipping graduates for the 21st century.

We also offer a number of services assisting international students during their time in the UK. ISAS (International Student Advisory Service) offers confidential information and support to international and EU students on a range of issues, including immigration advice, financial issues, employment and adjusting to life in the UK. ISAS also organises an arrivals weekend for international students, before the start of term.

Oxford Brookes University is situated 50 miles from London in the beautiful city of Oxford. As one of the world's great student cities, Oxford is a great place to live and study as it is big enough to offer something for people of all interests, yet small enough to feel welcoming and accessible.
