Queen's University Belfast

Queen's University Belfast is unique. An international leader in innovation and education rooted at the heart of its local community, it aims to inspire its students - the leaders of tomorrow - to realise their full potential.

As a member of the prestigious Russell Group of the UK's 20 leading research-intensive universities, the University's academic profile covers a wide range of disciplines, from medicine, law and engineering to the humanities, social sciences, science and agriculture.

In recent years Queen's has emerged as a major player on the international scene in areas ranging from cancer studies to climate change, from wireless technology to poetry and from pharmaceuticals to sonic arts.

The University's research strengths are also reflected in the quality of its teaching, in the 2009 independent institutional audit by the UK's Quality Assurance Agency, Queen's was given the highest level of assurance. The Times Good University Guide 2009 featured a wide range of Queen's subjects in the top 10 in the UK.

Queen's is located in the heart of Belfast, Northern Ireland's capital, described by Lonely Planet Guide as a 'must-see visitor destination'. Northern Ireland is famous for its spectacular scenery, including a World Heritage site - the Giant's Causeway, often described as 'the eighth wonder of the world', its fascinating history, its thriving cultural life, and, particularly, the friendliness and hospitality of its people.

Northern Ireland has been shown by the UN to be safer than England and Wales, with Belfast as one of the safest cities in Europe. It also has the lowest cost of living in the UK, according to the British Council. With two airports and ferry ports, Belfast is only an hour away from all major UK destinations, and easily accessible from across the globe.

Queen's residential accommodation is among the best in the UK. The University has recently invested over £45 million in providing excellent facilities at Elms Student Village, which is a short walk through a leafy suburb to the University. Accommodation is available on a self-catered and catered basis, with en suite rooms and free internet access.

It is an excellent place to learn English. Queen's English Language Unit is accredited by the British Council, and the University is famous for its writers and poets, including Nobel prize-winning Seamus Heaney, after whom its centre in creative writing is named, and Paul Muldoon, a former winner of the Pulitzer Prize.

Queen's is a renowned centre for cultural activity. Each year it hosts the Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queen's, one of the most exciting arts festivals in the UK and Ireland. It is also home to its own cinema, the Queen's Film Theatre, and to the Naughton Art Gallery.
