The University of Sheffield is at the forefront of world research. As a result, the latest developments in each discipline inform our teaching. In teaching, 29 of our subject areas have been rated as "excellent", the UK's third highest. The University is in the UK's top 10 for research power, according to the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Overall, 41 of the University's 49 submissions had 50 per cent or more of their work assessed at the top grades of 4* and 3*. Three subjects came first for the quality of their research in the UK and 11 other subjects were ranked in the top five.

The University of Sheffield has five prestigious EPSRC Centres for Doctoral Training. These confirm our reputation for research excellence in the fields of energy research, metallurgy, nuclear energy and advanced engineering for the water sector.

We're in the world's top 80 and UK's top 10 universities according to the Shanghai Jiao Tong University's ranking of the top 500 universities worldwide. We recently won our fourth Queen's Anniversary Prize for our Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre with Boeing. This is a prime example of our strong relationships with global organisations. Our reputation for world-class research attracts multinational companies like Boeing, Rolls-Royce, Messier-Dowty and BAe Systems. They invest millions of pounds in collaboration with our University.

We are investing £220 million in our buildings and facilities. This includes £160 million in developing student accommodation and the £23 million learning resource centre, Information Commons.

Sheffield is one of the most popular cities for students in the UK. It's England's fourth largest city. It is a friendly, safe and affordable place to live. The city is located in the centre of the UK. You can get a direct train from Manchester International Airport to Sheffield in under an hour. London is only just over two hours away by train. It has good transport links and is close to the Peak District countryside. Our University campus is a mixture of the traditional and modern. It stretches from the city centre towards Sheffield's green suburbs.

We have a range of support services for international students. These include pre-departure information, our airport Meet and Greet scheme, our orientation programme, and trained advisers to help with academic, financial and immigration issues. We also have free English language support during your studies at the University.
