Based in the heart of central London, the Institute of Education (IOE) is the UK's leading centre for studies in education and related disciplines.
Part of the University of London, the IOE was founded in 1902 with a mission to pursue excellence in education and the social sciences. In the century since, it has become a globally-respected hub of ideas and debate, attracting students and scholars from over 100 countries every year.
In 2008, the IOE was officially named the number one university in the UK for education research by the UK government's Research Assessment Exercise, and in 2009 it was ranked fourth nationally for student satisfaction. The IOE offers unrivalled opportunities in education and the social sciences at postgraduate level, including more than 50 masters degrees and the largest doctoral school in its field in the UK. It is also home to Europe's largest education studies library.
The Institute provides an intellectually rich and culturally diverse learning community for students. Many Institute staff members are pre-eminent scholars and students have access to a world class professoriate conducting cutting edge research for governments, NGOs and organizations around the world.
The Institute of Education was founded in October 1902 as the London Day Training College (LDTC) under the joint patronage of the University of London and the London County Council. The IOE later joined the University of London as a member college. It was awarded its royal charter in 1987. This gave the Institute the status of a university in its own right, although it remains part of the University of London.
Although training teachers is still an essential part of the IOE's activity, the Institute has developed its role as a leader in national and international education policy and practice and the number one choice for education professionals from around the world to develop themselves and their careers in the UK.
The Institute of Education has over 5900 students of which 1100 are international students coming from over 100 countries worldwide.
The Institute has been praised by the Higher Education Funding Council for England for the scale of its outstanding contribution to research and vitality of its research culture. The Institute has developed into an unrivalled centre of educational research and is a member of the 1994 Group of leading research intensive UK universities.
The IOE's international reach extends to over 100 countries across the world. The Institute has research, consultancy and collaborative partnerships with governments, international and national agencies, institutions and organisations in every continent.
