St George's, University of London

The University is one of the UK's best-known specialist providers of medical and healthcare education, which is widely recognised for the quality of its research and high rates of graduate employment.

St George's heritage and tradition of innovation in research and education stretches back over 250 years: from the founder of scientific surgery, John Hunter, and the doctor responsible for vaccine development, Edward Jenner, to today's internationally recognised scientists at the forefront of research and treatment.

Located in Tooting, a lively, cosmopolitan part of South West London, it shares a site and clinical resources with St George's NHS Healthcare Trust, teaching medicine, biomedical sciences and health and social care sciences from the heart of one of the UK's busiest hospitals. Training in a hospital that treats half a million patients a year, students at St George's gain unrivalled clinical experience in an environment that nurtures excellence and innovation.

As well as the four and five-year MBBS in medicine, St George's offers foundation level, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in healthcare sciences including: diagnostic or therapeutic radiography; physiotherapy; biomedical informatics; biomedical science; nursing; midwifery; social work; and specialist research based postgraduate degrees. Many of these courses are delivered through the Joint Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences - a partnership with Kingston University.

St George's is active in clinical research in areas including cardiovascular sciences, basic medical sciences, epidemiology and human genetics. Amongst the cutting-edge work being done in the labs are world-leading developments in anti-HIV treatment, such as innovative microbicide gels.

The campus has an upbeat and friendly ambiance, which isn't surprising when students have some of the best employment prospects in the country to look forward to - 99% of graduates are employed or in education within six months of graduating and the average starting salary for graduates from this institution is £26,655 (third highest of full-time first degree qualifiers in the country).

Listed as one of Time Out London's 'hot neighbourhoods' of 2008, Tooting is a culturally vibrant place with an exciting, diverse and mixed background of people and cultures. The trendy neighbourhoods of Clapham and Wimbledon are close by and Central London is just a 20 minute tube ride away.

And because it's based in London, St George's benefits from some of the best transport links in the country, so it's easy to get around.
