Partnership

Working Partnerships

BUIC is committed to working to facilitate constructive engagement between the British and Iraqi Higher Education sectors, and to this aim we seek to develop strategic partnerships with other organisations. Below is a list of our partners and the projects we have collaborated on.

Iraq Educational Initiative

Launched by Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki, this is a bold and visionary programme designed to provide educational opportunities overseas for Iraqi students as part of a capacity-building project. A major focus of the Initiative is a scholarship scheme to send up to 10,000 Iraqi students to study abroad at universities in the UK, USA and elsewhere. The scheme is implemented by the Higher Committee for Education Development in Iraq.

A pilot project to place 500 students overseas commenced in the summer of 2009, and 200 of these students are expected to be sent to study in Britain. BUIC is working closely with the Higher Committee for Education Development, the British Council and organisers of the Rawabit Project to support the initiative.

UK Higher Education Engagement with Iraq

Produced by the UK Higher Education International Unit; the British Universities Iraq Consortium; and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (now part of the new Department for Business, Innovation and Skills), this report considers the prospects for higher education engagement between the United Kingdom and Iraq.

Iraqi Education Sector Information

UK NARIC have approached BUIC to discuss updating the information they hold on the Iraqi education system.

MoHESR Iraqi Scholarship Programme

On 13 March 2006 the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research launched an ambitious scholarship programme aimed at helping to upgrade the country's HE system by providing financial support for Iraqi scholars to study Masters and PhD programmes overseas.

In partnership with the British Council, BUIC has provided detailed advice to the MoHESR on how best to implement its postgraduate scholarship programme and has facilitated applications to universities in the consortium. A number of scholars have subsequently enrolled on programmes at BUIC universities
