BUIC is committed to working to facilitate constructive engagement between the British and Iraqi Higher Education sectors, and to this aim we seek to develop strategic partnerships with other organisations. Below is a list of our partners and the projects we have collaborated on:
DelPHE-Iraq will support the development of partnerships between Iraqi higher education institutions (HEIs) and those in the UK and other countries.
Managed by the British Council, the scheme is part of the wider DFID funded Development Partnerships in Higher Education (DelPHE) programme, which funds partnerships between HEIs in the UK and other countries in order to promote sustainable development. DelPHE-Iraq will address some of the challenges faced by the Iraqi higher education sector as a result of years of isolation and underinvestment. BUIC advised on the drafting of the programme for Iraq and the BUIC Chair, Dr John Withrington, has been invited to attend the launch of the programme in Erbil and Baghdad
Launched by Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki, this is a bold and visionary programme designed to provide educational opportunities overseas for Iraqi students as part of a capacity-building project. A major focus of the Initiative is a scholarship scheme to send up to 10,000 Iraqi students to study abroad at universities in the UK, USA and elsewhere. The scheme is implemented by the Higher Committee for Education Development in Iraq.
A pilot project to place 500 students overseas commenced in the summer of 2009, and 200 of these students are expected to be sent to study in Britain. BUIC is working closely with the Higher Committee for Education Development, the British Council and organisers of the Rawabit Project to support the initiative.
Produced by the UK Higher Education International Unit; the British Universities Iraq Consortium; and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (now part of the new Department for Business, Innovation and Skills), this report considers the prospects for higher education engagement between the United Kingdom and Iraq.
UK NARIC have approached BUIC to discuss updating the information they hold on the Iraqi education system.
The British Council has as one of its goals to develop long-term relationships between the academic community in the United Kingdom and Iraq. To this end they allocated £150,000 to BUIC to administer. This was available to member Universities so they could fund projects which helped built up the capacity of the Iraqi academic community. The British Council suggested activities such as the development of new teaching materials, courses and curriculum; the development of joint research programmes and publication of findings; staff development; activity that strengthens management and administration links between HE institutions in the UK and Iraq; or the development of realistic joint project proposals for external funding.
On 13 March 2006 the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research launched an ambitious scholarship programme aimed at helping to upgrade the country's HE system by providing financial support for Iraqi scholars to study Masters and PhD programmes overseas.
In partnership with the British Council, BUIC has provided detailed advice to the MoHESR on how best to implement its postgraduate scholarship programme and has facilitated applications to universities in the consortium. A number of scholars have subsequently enrolled on programmes at BUIC universities
